God Fearin’ Shoes

Once upon a time, a some really good friends of mine were getting a divorce.  It was a ugly piece of business, involving drugs, infidelity, and the usual list of marital woes (and some not so usual ones, too, now that I think back on it).   They were both acting just as dumb as dumb could get. It was the kind of situation where I wasn’t sure which one of them I most wanted to smack some sense into.   But back in those days, I was still something of a hippie pacifist, so instead of laying a beating on anyone, I left them to their ugly divorce, and went off and wrote this tasty little blues song about the whole affair.

The lyrics are basically the advice I would have given said friends while I was pounding them, had I gone that route. The music is my favorite kind; a nice 12/8 time blues shuffle that gets down in your bones and rattles around for a long groovy time. Overall, this is probably not the best song I ever wrote, but the day in the studio when I was recording this track you can hook up below, it was one of my finest hours as a guitar player. If I ever lay down nicer guitar tracks in this lifetime, I will be shocked.

God Fearin Shoes

Lyrics:

God Fearin’ Shoes, by Jack Lambert

I hear you been talking trash again
Same ole trash that’s always said
When you’ve let a bit of powder trip
Go right to your head

It ain’t the drugs that’ll mess you up
It’s you messing up with the drugs
Forgetting what you’ve got today
An giving on up on love

Well I been down that road before
And babe I know you know I know
Every last turn along the way
Between here and where it goes

So take a kind word from an old friend
Put on some God fearing shoes
   ‘Cause walkin’ alone
In the ones you got on
Is a good way to find the blues
It’s a good way to find the blues

 [Short Guitar Solo]

I’ve known you for a long time now
6 years maybe more
I’ve seen you do some stupid things
But never like this before

Is it gettin hard to face yourself
In the mirror every day?
Don’t it make you want to run along
When people ask what you’ve got to say

Well I been down that road before
And babe I know you know I know
Every last turn along the way
Between here and where it goes

So take a kind word from an old friend
Put on some God fearing shoes
   ‘Cause walkin’ alone
In the ones you got on
Is a good way to find the blues
It’s a good way to find the blues

 [Main Guitar Solo]

I hear you been talking trash again
Same trash that’s always said
When you’ve let a bit of powder trip
Go right to your head

It ain’t the drugs that’ll mess you up
It’s you messing up with the drugs
Forgetting what you’ve got today
An giving up on your love

Well I been down that road before
And babe I know you know I know
Every last turn along the way
Between here and where it goes

So take a kind word from an old friend
Put on some God fearing shoes
‘Cause walkin’ alone
In the ones you got on
Is a good way to find the blues
It’s a good way to find the blues

Well I been down that road before
And babe I know you know I know
Every last turn along the way
Between here and where it goes

So take a kind word from an old friend
Put on some God fearing shoes
   ‘Cause walkin’ alone
In the ones you got on
Is a good way to find the blues
It’s a good way to find the blues
