Miles to Walk

I have always loved the song Amazing Grace. It’s one of those things that is stirring and beautiful and memorable, even if you aren’t a Christian. In modern praise/worship circles, it’s become commonplace to re-write such old classics. In my opinion, none of the re-writes improve on the originals (and if it’s not an improvement, you can figure out by process of elimination what it must surely be).

Though, I do confess, I once found myself tempted to re-write Amazing Grace at a particularly painful and difficult point in my life. However, I resisted that temptation, and instead I wrote this song I titled “Miles to Walk”. I don’t know if it’s as good as the song which inspired it (I kind of suspect it is not), but it’s the best and most honest hymn I’ve ever wrote, or expect to write.

I really wish I had the time/wherewithal to get this one recorded correctly, with lead guitars and background vocals and something resembling a decent arrangement (and the corrected lyric from the 2nd verse). But, I don’t. So rather than let this one remain hidden away, I’m putting this rather poorly thought out recording on this page. Click the link below to listen.

Lyrics:

Miles To Walk, by Jack Lambert

Come all yee tired, an heavy laden
Come lay your burden, down at that cross
So that we, might travel lightly
For there are miles, we’ve yet to walk

Oh my God, my precious savior
Just who am I, that you should save?
When ore’ these years, we’re far past counting
These sins of mine, for which you’ve paid

But there’s no peace, no there’s no joy
Like that I know, in your sweet name
You fill my soul, with love and comfort
You call me in, out of the pain

Come all yee tired, an heavy laden
Come and lay your burden, down at that cross
So that we, might travel lightly
For there are miles, we’ve yet to walk
Yes there are miles, we have yet to walk
